Dissemination workshop on phytosanitary requirements for peppercorn export to China, Cambodia
Date: 18 - 20 Oct 2023
Plant Protection Sanitary and Phytosanitary Department organized a training course on 'Adapted PGS Approach Cambodia Field Audit, Farmer Sharing Activities' at Memot district, Cambodia. A total of 41 participants joined this workshop.
Introduce farmers and farmer sharing

Ms Kim introduced the program and purpose of this mission such as farmer and farmer sharing and audit on the farm using the PGS field checklist. Following on, Sela staff selected farmers to share their experience with pruning on their peppercorn farm. Mr. Rambo from General Directorate of Agriculture (GDA) explained the PGS field checklist to farmers after which they were divided into three groups for the following activity.

Mr. Sovanna, the farm owner, shared his experience about pruning peppercorn in his farm to all three groups in which he mentioned there is no need to conduct pruning every year - it all depends on the actual situation. Other farm groups shared their own experiences and skills on pepper farming as well.

PGS field checklist

The checklist has 8 parts and the 3 groups were assigned different parts as follows:
  • Group 1: Part 1 - 2
  • Group 2: Part 3 - 5
  • Group 3: Part 6 - 8
The groups were given 30 minutes to discuss and make observations at the farm. Each group presented the results of the farm audit to others. From this exercise, the participants understood how the PGS field checklist works on-site. The farm owner also encouraged the participants to share their experiences in order to improve their farm practices eg. how to choose the right pesticide.

Meeting with Sela Pepper

Sela plans to organize a meeting with the PGS group at the end of October 2023. GDA will provide leaflets on (1) pesticide-safe use and disposal (2) pesticide containers and (3) quarantine pests of pepper. At the end of the meeting, the group will provide information on pesticides used and Sela will offer MRL testing results. GDA will make recommendations for pesticide applications on pepper farms and then provide information to farmers before the next PGS group meeting.

In the Oct meeting, Ms. ORNG Vitou shared a presentation on Adapted PGS (A-PGS) Approach Cambodia, Field Audit, Farmer Sharing Activities, created action plans for next activities and awarded A-PGS champion certificates to the farmers.
