3rd PGS training with Sela pepper company and farmer groups, Cambodia
Date: 16 Aug 2023
The third PGS training for Sela Pepper staffs and farmer groups was conducted by Grant Vinning and Suzanne Neave
The training started with the review of the PGS group in Memot province to understand the status of the group. Next was updating the crop calendar by having 2 groups of farmers entering dates for social activities (busy or not busy), when technical training is needed to produce the finalised crop calendar and update training plans based on it.

SWOT analysis was conducted to find out the challenges faced by farmers in gaining access to overseas markets (EU, China). The participants were divided into 2 groups (Sela pepper staff and farmers) for this exercise.

Key outputs of SWOT session:
  • Strength: Producing good quality peppercorn (PGS & GAP), experiences and techniques for producing peppercorn, existing associations (willing to grow more).
  • Weakness: Insufficient peppercorn supply to meet market demand, limited capital to invest, lack of participation in association
  • Opportunities:High demand from export markets (China & EU), expanding land to grow peppercorn, GDA support (COP trainings)
  • Threats: High price of agriculture input, climate problems (winds, drought, heavy rains), pest and disease occurring on the farm, pest quarantines
Introduction of risk, level of risk and types of risk were conducted by dividing the farmers into 2 groups. Clip chart papers and activity cards were used to identify what CoP activities risk levels were (low, medium and high) and these were matched by both groups to set criteria for the checklist.

Farmer group record keeping practices was the next activity; kinds of records farmer groups keep: pesticide records, fertilizer records, label input records, harvesting records..etc

The following discussion was on the topic of non-compliance. An example was given on riding a bicycle on the pavement, levels of risk arising out of non-compliance and how to manage /deal with cases of non-compliance. Remind, re-educate and re-enforce with the 3 strikes rule were techniques used to encourage compliance.
