Safer spice - food safety and market access for peppercorn
Adapted PGS training, Vietnam
Date: 22 Aug 2023
This training was to provide WASI, PPD staff, Simexco, Vietpep, and farmers from Dak Lak and Vung Tau with tools to implement the adapted PGS scheme.
The adapted PGS approach can facilitate adoption of good farming practices and produce consistently high quality, safe pepper in a sustainable way. It needs to start with a willing buyer and willing seller.

CABI experts provided a series of tools to help participants activate the adapted PGS. The tools include:

  • developing a crop calendar
  • undertaking SWOT analysis
  • understanding risk
  • addressing non-compliance
  • doing a value chain analysis
For stakeholder mapping in the peppercorn value chain, the Tara’s milk story from Nepal was used to illustrate the identification of actors along the supply chain. Participants then listed the actors and roles in their peppercorn supply chain, and mapped the flow of their peppercorn from the farm to the factory.
