PGS training and group formation, Lao PDR

PGS training was conducted for DoA staff, peppercorn company and farmers over a period of 3 days to bring about the creation of a viable PGS group
The mission of CABI experts (Suzanne Neave and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan) was to meet with the Laos team, conduct training on PGS and to prepare the setting up of PGS group comprising farmers and representatives of pepper company, E Tu Green Garden Company (buyers and sellers).

After meeting with DoA and agreeing on the programme agenda and logistics, the training took place the next day.

On the first day, training was delivered to 5 DoA staff, 1 representative of E Tu Green Garden Company and 7 farmers. The topics touched on were as follows:
  • SWOT analysis
  • Solomon island case study
  • Field visit for farmer exchange
  • Benefits of being in a group
  • Ingredients to a successful group
  • Principles of marketing

For the second day, the same group reflected on and reviewed the previous day's lesson. The other items for discussion on the second day include:

  • PGS structure and organisation
  • CoP and record keeping
  • Creating a shared vision
  • Benefits of being in a group
  • Ingredients to a successful group
  • Principles of marketing

On the last day, the experts convened with DoA staff to review activities and what was taught the previous two days. Discussions were held to decide which stakeholders would join the PGS group, agenda for the first inter-group meeting, agreement on shared vision, group rules and regulations, and action plan to be implemented.
