The problems highlighted by Mr Dat who is Harris Freeman's representative are two: the high cost of monitoring and quality control of peppercorn and the low awareness of farmers on the quality of peppercorn.
They interviewed three farmers to get updates on their farm operations under the project. The first farmer is Mr. Oanh from Hoa Hoi Commune who owns 0.5ha of peppercorn farm. His farm does not use pesticides and chemical fertilisers and he emphasises health, labour safety and sustainability. The harvest has dropped this year compared to the last due to irregular rain and cold air.Mr. Quan from Hoa Hiep Commune is the second farmer who was interviewed. He, too, does not use pesticides but mixes chemical fertilisers with cow and goat dung. The yield this year has dropped dramatically compared to last year.
The third farmer, Mr. Coi from Hoa Hoi Commune, is dependent on pesticides and chemical fertilisers and only recently implemented sustainable farming. His yield dropped dramatically compared to last year like Mr. Oanh's farm due to irregular rain and cold. He is not too interested in sustainable farming practices but rather on chasing profits. All three farmers are interested in the PGS scheme and are willing to participate in the related activities.
