Meeting with Harris Freeman and Vietnam Pepper Association, Vietnam
Date: 24 & 28 Aug 2023
Training for Harris Freeman staff on adapted PGS and briefing on the project activities for Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA)
Due to complications, the team were not able to meet with Harris Freeman growers despite applying for permission. Instead the team met with Mr Dat and some staff in another location. They showed considerable interest in some of the project tools.

The meeting with VPA staffs (Mr. Viet Anh and Ms. Quynh) allowed the team to update and brief VPA on the project activities.

Some conclusions:
The team will send the Code of Practice and the Interpretation Guide to Harris Freeman; Kim is to facilitate sessions on developing the crop calendar and SWOT analysis. Harris Freeman is to align the training modules of the COP with the crop calendar tool.

WASI to produce a factsheet on the production of fish-based fertilizer. This will be of considerable interest for the producers around Vung Tau as well as peppercorn growers in Cambodia. WASI is to adjust the final COP to include references to record keeping and the presence of chickens on peppercorn farms.

It was noted that there are differences between the Highlands and around Vung Tau in terms of temperature, height of the vines (or at least their support mechanism), and intercropping. It was considered that since Cambodian conditions appeared comparable with those around Vung Tau, WASI could explore using Cambodia’s experience for the region.

With VPA, project staff (depending on availability) could be invited to the annual meeting between IDH and VPA. The project will also invite VPA to its final meeting in 2024. It is considered that VPA would have been an excellent partner in the project. Correspondence confirming these issues have been sent to the three organisations and replies received.
